Tuition, Tutoring, Enrichment in Singapore:
Which is Best for
Your Child?

Eye Level Enrichment or Tuition little girl shrug

If choosing an after-school program for your child has left you feeling like this,
you’re not alone.

Maybe you enrolled your daughter in tuition class in Singapore but you aren’t seeing much progress…

You wouldn’t be the first.

Maybe you hired a private tutor, but your son feels overwhelmed and misses having other students in the classroom. And let’s not even get started on the damage that this tutor’s hourly fee is doing to your wallet…

The truth is, tuition classes and private tutoring are both good options; they are not, however, good options for everyone. Fortunately, there’s a type of class that offers the “best of both worlds.”

Enrichment classes.

Enrichment classes incorporate the benefits unique to tuition and tutoring while cutting out the drawbacks of each.

No more big classrooms where your child receives little attention. No more pressure-filled one-on-one sessions where your child has no classmates to learn with.

Now, as beneficial as enrichment classes are, they do of course have some weaker points. So to help you get a better idea of which type of classes will best suit your child, let’s have a quick look at the pros and cons of each.

Differences between enrichment and tuition class in Singapore

We’ve compiled them into a simple table for your convenience. You’re very welcome.

Tuition Tutoring Enrichment
Class Size large (9-15+) tiny (1) small (4-9)
Class Schedule fixed flexible flexible
Curriculum one-size-fits-all individualized individualized
Individual Attention minimal maximum significant
Cost $-$$$ $$$-$$$$$ $$-$$$
Preparation for School / PSLE main focus customizable customizable
Life Skills limited included extensive

Wow, that certainly simplified things.

In case you’re not quite sure exactly what to make of the categories above, here’s a quick breakdown:

(*This is only meant to be a brief glimpse at each category. We’re going to help you navigate them individually in blogs to come, so stay tuned!)

Class Size

The amount of students in a given classroom has an enormous effect on the classroom dynamic, as well as teaching and learning styles.

As part of a big class, individual students need to be mature enough to listen well and try their best without close teacher supervision. The smaller the class, the more the teacher will be able to supervise and immediately solve any issues students face.

Class Schedule

This is a big one. Most parents in our nation these days have a hectic schedule to begin with, and that’s before you factor in all they do for their kids’ schedules! Flexible class timing offers parents and their busy children a chance to fit in as many classes as they can, whenever they can.

Crazy day? We understand. Your child is sick? Sorry to hear that. We’ll see you as soon as she’s healthy. Flexible scheduling means class timing on your terms.

Curriculum

General curricula usually offer the benefit of being time-tested and having proven results. A classroom with individualized curricula will have certain students learning different things at different times.

Why not combine the two and reap the benefits of each? Look for a center that begins with a standardized curriculum and then evolves and individualizes the lessons as your child progresses.

Individual Attention

Big classes inevitably mean that some children get lost in a “sea of faces,” at least from time to time. On the other hand, some students can become “paralyzed” from being in the spotlight in a class with too few students.

It is best to determine your child’s learning style and go from there. Generally, though, mid-sized classes are a happy middle ground for most students.

Cost

Big class size typically means cheaper price tag, and vice-versa. However, the cost of classes can vary widely even within the same niche, so it’s important to visit and compare a few centers so that you can weigh the cost/ benefit.

Just remember: you get what you pay for. And when it comes to your child’s education, is it really that important to save a few dollars?

Preparation for School / PSLE

School and the PSLE exam are both immensely important to your child’s future in Singapore. Find a learning center that offer extensive, individualized support in these areas. Just be sure that these aren’t the only learning areas they offer… Life does, in fact, go on after the PSLE. Call us crazy, but we think our children should be prepared for that too.

Life Skills

In the rapidly-changing world your children are growing up in, it’s more important than ever that they be problem-solvers, critical thinkers, and lifelong learners. These life skills and attributes will carry them further than any perfect score on a test could.

In a nutshell,

  • If you’re looking for the barebones, absolute cheapest option to help your child get through school and prepare for the PSLE, tuition could be a good choice for you.
  • If money is no issue and you already know for certain that your child thrives in a one-on-one situation with a teacher, tutoring is probably the best choice for you.
  • And if you are looking for a reasonably priced class that offers flexible timing, individualized curriculum and feedback, preparation for school/ PSLE, and life skills…

Enrichment classes are your best option.

What’s that? We’re biased? Ok, yes, you got us. We are a little bit biased. But only because we at Eye Level have seen firsthand how well enrichment works. We have Math and English enrichment class that suitable children age 4 to 14 years old. We even have Play Math that suits younger children from 3 to 4 years old. Just ask the thousands of successful students we’ve helped over the past 41 years…

That right, thousands. And guess what?

We’ve got good news.
